Criminal law includes prosecution by the government for an act which, if proven, constitutes a crime. More serious crimes, such as homicides, rapes and aggravated assaults, are considered felonies. Less serious crimes, including petty theft, are misdemeanors. A finding of guilt by a judge or jury can result in prison time and/or fines and adverse, collateral intrusion into one’s life.
